on Rice University’s campus. For directions to our offices please visit our Directions Website.
Who is Richard E. Smalley?
The Smalley
Institute has devoted a section of the website to our founder Professor Richard
E. Smalley where we provide biographical, historical, and scientific
information. Additionally, we provide
links to other sources of information.
What does the Smalley Institute do?
The Smalley Institute leads the world in
solving humanity’s most pressing problems through the application of
nanotechnology. The Smalley
Institute actively supports Rice University’s nanoscale science and technology efforts
by providing experienced and knowledgeable leadership, a solid administrative
framework, world-class infrastructure, superior educational initiatives, and
productive community, industry, and government relations.
More details regarding
our initiatives are provided on our website: Centers and Components, ResearchAreas, Education, Community Partnership, Events, Initiatives.
How do I become a member of the Smalley Institute?
The Smalley
Institute offers membership, association, and partnership through a variety of
avenues. If you have questions or would
like to request membership please contact us at nano@rice.edu.
- Academic Membership
is reserved for students, staff, and faculty researching nanotechnology at Rice
University.
- The NanoFANS program is available for everyone. The
NanoFANS are Associates of the Smalley Institute and participate in Rice
University’s international leadership in nanotechnology by helping fund
activities and research awards at the Richard E. Smalley Institute for
Nanoscale Science and Technology. All
NanoFAN members receive advanced notice of seminars, scientific meetings, and
Smalley Institute events. Higher
membership levels offer additional opportunities to support and network
directly with our faculty and students.
- The Smalley Student
Society (S3) is a science club for middle school to post-doctoral students
interested in nanotechnology.
- Corporate Partners
are private industry organizations that sponsor research at the Smalley
Institute through the donation of funds and/or equipment.
Can I tour a nanotechnology laboratory?
The Smalley
Institute provides tours on a limited basis.
Please contact us at nano@rice.edu
for more details.
Can I contact someone for more information?
Yes, we would like
to hear from you. Please send all
inquiries to nano@rice.edu.
Research at the Smalley Institute
Does the Smalley Institute have summer internships or research
opportunities for students?
For undergraduate
students, there are several NSF funded REU (research experience for undergrads)
programs at Rice University.
Center for Biological and
Environmental Nanotechnology
Institute for Biosciences and Bioengineering
NanoPhotonics
Laboratory
Rice Quantum Institute
other REU programs around
the US
Additionally, individual
faculty members may have research opportunities in their laboratory that are
not associated with a structured research program. We invite interested parties to contact
individual faculty members to discuss potential opportunities.
Does the Smalley Institute have graduate and post-doc positions
available?
The Smalley
Institute does not directly offer graduate or post-doc positions. We suggest you contact individual faculty
members to identify potential opportunities.
To aid in your search, we provide lists of Smalley Institute faculty
with research synopsis and sorted by research area.
Degrees in Nanotechnology
Does Rice University offer an undergraduate degree in nanotechnology?
Rice University
does not offer an undergraduate degree specifically in nanotechnology. Undergraduates should think of nanotechnology
as they would a pre-medical, -dental, or –law program. You should major in a biological
science, natural
science, or engineering
discipline and work with a faculty member who specializes in nanotechnology. To help you identify the faculty member you
want to work with, the Smalley Institute has provided a listing of faculty
members with nanotechnology interest along with a brief research description.
Does Rice University offer a masters degree in nanotechnology?
Yes, Rice University
offers a Professional Master of
Science in Nanoscale Physics.
The Nanoscale Physics program prepares students for a career in
nanoscience by combining a strong component in quantum theory, which governs
the behavior of systems at the nanoscale, with the study of practical nano-
and mesoscale devices. This provides the student with the knowledge
required to successfully navigate the emerging field of nanoscale science
and nanotechnology.
Does Rice University offer a doctorate in nanotechnology?
Rice University
does not offer a doctorate degree specifically in nanotechnology. You should apply to a graduate studies
program in a biological
science, natural
science, or engineering
discipline and work with a faculty member who specializes in
nanotechnology. To help you identify the
faculty member you want to work with, the Smalley Institute has provided a
listing of faculty members with nanotechnology interests along with a brief
research description for each.
Facilities and Instrumentation
What are the research facilities at Rice University? How do I utilize any of the research
facilities at Rice
University?
